What is an Indigenous way of seeing? And what role does perception play in different Indigenous languages and systems of knowledge around the world?

Join the Power Institute for a very exciting event:

Kānawapātāhmōwin: A Symposium on Indigenous Visual Knowledge

🗓️ When: 10am - 5pm on March 4, 2024
📍 Where: Chat Chak Wing Museum, University of Sydney, Australia

Kānawapātāhmōwin, a Plains Cree word that denotes a condition of seeing and perceiving, offers one set of answers to these questions. This symposium will present others, bringing together artists and knowledge keepers to discuss the language, history and politics of Indigenous visual knowledge.

The symposium is convened by Plains Cree scholar, artist and curator Gerald McMaster @mcmaster.gerald , who will also deliver a keynote.

Congratulations Dr. Gerald McMaster on the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Universities Art Association of Canada (UAAC-AAUC)! The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a past or present member of UAAC who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession over the whole of a career either through leadership, creation, education, curatorial projects, service, or publications.

As an artist, curator, writer, and educator, Dr. McMaster has dedicated his career to reshaping perceptions of Indigenous visual knowledge in contemporary art. Through his work he has challenged stereotypes and advocated for the recognition of Indigenous art as contemporary art, profoundly influencing the way we interpret Indigenous art and the world around us today.

Professor emeritus at OCAD University, adjunct curator of the Remai Modern in Saskatoon, and director of the Wapatah Centre for Indigenous Visual Knowledge at OCADU, Dr. McMaster is currently in Australia as part of a Visiting Professorship at the University of Sydney.

“Arctic/ Amazon: Networks of Global Indigeneity” offers a conversation between Indigenous artists, curators, and knowledge keepers of two regions in this time of political and environmental upheaval. Both regions are environmentally sensitive areas that have become hot spots in the debates circling around climate change and have long been contact zones between Indigenous Peoples and outsiders - zones of meeting and clashing, of contradictions and entanglement.

Opening with an Epistolary Exchange between the authors, Gerald McMaster and Nina Vincent, Arctic/Amazon then widens to include essays by 12 Indigenous artists, curators, and knowledge-keepers.

About the Exhibition
Arctic/Amazon: Networks of Global Indigeneity exhibition explores the ways in which Indigenous contemporary artists take on issues of climate change, globalized Indigeneity, and contact zones in and about the Arctic and the Amazon during a time of crisis. The works featured in this exhibition embody a politics of resistance, resurgence, and ways of knowing and being in relation to the lands that are the source of their knowledge and creativity.

Encompassing a range of media, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, installation, video, and performance, this exhibition sheds light on current geopolitical and environmental sustainability issues that inform artistic practices in these two regions.

Starting at 2 PM, this week’s Sunday Scene will welcome writer and researcher Carmen Victor, who will offer her interpretation on Arctic/Amazon: Networks of Global Indigeneity.⁠

Right after that, at 3 PM, we’ll kick off Power Kids: Print/Pattern, inspired by the art of Yanomami artist Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe. The event will start with a short talk in the gallery, focusing on the Yanomami culture of body painting. Later on, families will design their own symbols and use printmaking techniques to create posters!⁠

Dr. Gerald McMaster @mcmaster.gerald is a leading voice nationally and internationally, with over 30 years of experience in contemporary art, critical theory, museology and Indigenous aesthetics. He is Plains Cree from the Red Pheasant Cree Nation and a member of the Siksika Nation. He served as the Canadian Commissioner for the 1995 Venice Biennale, Artistic Director of the 2012 Biennale of Sydney, and Curator for the 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture. Dr. McMaster has served as Adjunct Curator for Remai Modern since 2018 and Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair and Director of Wapatah Centre for Indigenous Visual Knowledge at OCAD University in Toronto.

Olinda Reshijabe Silvano’s vibrant mural features maze-like designs known as the ancestral Shibipo-Konibo art of kené. Across her work, Silvano references el Ronín, a divine anaconda who is the mother of the earth and water, and whose geometric patterns inspired kené art. Cosmovisions and creation stories are accompanied by icaros—healing and ritualistic songs—that materialize kené designs into creation. The abstracted linework represents the koshi force of plants—positive energy—that manifest as colourful lines perceptible to Shipibo-Konibo artists.

Olinda Reshijabe Silvano (b. Paoyhan, Peru) is a Shipibo-Konibo artist whose woven embroidery textiles and public art feature bold geometric abstractions, known as kené designs. The kené is a network of meaning and complex relations guiding paths, healing, and creating connections between human and more-than-human beings in an animated environment. These maze-like patterns are sacred designs that emerge from singing and experiencing connections between worlds propitiated by shamanism that render the invisible perceptible. Silvano is a symbol of resistance in Cantagallo, Peru, where she relocated to continue the tradition of kené art along with the collective Las Madres Artesanas (the Artisan Mothers).

This workshop also offers an insight into João Paulo Barreto’s approach to the Yepa Mashã philosophy, the intimate connection of healing practices and ancestral knowledge, and the application of Indigenous medicine at the Centro de Medicina Indígena da Amazônia and beyond.

The workshop will also touch upon Ailton Krenak’s historic speech on September 4, 1987 at Brazil’s National Constituent Assembly. An important moment for Indigenous peoples in Brazil, the speech still resonates today – as “performance art” and as a groundbreaking use of Indigenous language and art as political resistance.

The workshop will also touch on the Knowledge that exists in cultural belongings and the extensive Land Based Artwork of Lukin Linklater with her community in the Alutiiq villages of the Kodiak Island archipelago of southwestern Alaska.

This virtual event series is hosted in collaboration with the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery as part of Wapatah’s Global Indigeneity Initiative and the Arctic/Amazon project.

About the Speakers
Gerald McMaster, O.C., is a curator, artist, and author, and is currently professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair of Indigenous Visual Culture and Curatorial Practice at OCAD University where he leads a team of researchers at the Wapatah: Centre for Indigenous Visual Knowledge. @mcmaster.gerald

Nina Vincent is a Brazilian anthropologist, researcher, professor, independent curator and currently works at the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), where she works close to communities to preserve intangible heritage and Brazilian popular/traditional culture. @mientras_tanto_tudo_isso

Tanya Lukin Linklater is Supiaq/Alutiiq and her homelands are in the Kodiak Island archipelago of southwestern Alaska. Her performances, works for camera, installations, and writings have been shown at Soft Water Hard Stone, the 2021 New Museum Triennial, Soft Power at SFMOMA, ….and other such stories, the Chicago Architecture Biennial 2019, and elsewhere. In 2021 she received the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts for Visual Art. @afognak_suk

The first of four virtual Knowledge Exchange Workshops, Gerald McMaster and Nina Vincent will be joined by Harald Gaski to discuss the profound changes that have occurred in Indigenous Art studies and Arctic/Amazonian Art economies over the last fifty years.

Harald Gaski was born and grew up on the river Deatnu in Sápmi, on the 70th latitude in the northernmost county in Norway. Gaski is an author, editor, and a professor in Sámi literature at Sámi allaskuvla (Sámi University of Applied Sciences) in Guovdageaidnu, Norway, and a professor in Sámi culture and literature at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway.
